Purpose:

The conference is intended to enhace networking and partnerships amongst social science researchers, policy makers and practitioners (coroners, medical examiners, police, crown attorneys, anti-violence community agencies, etc) in their review of domestic homicides across Canadian provinces and territories.  The conference proceedings will focus on common risk factors and systemic gaps in policies, training and resources that are related to domestic homicides.  The ultimate goal of this work is to prevent domestic violence and save lives. 

Workshop Topics:

  • Impact of domestic violence on children as victims and witnesses of domestic homicide
  • Safety planning for women who are leaving abusive relationships
  • risk reduction and treatment of domestic violence perpetrators
  • Risk assessment of domestic violence by different sectors
  • Management of high risk domestic violence cases
  • Public education strategies for warning signs for lethal domestic violence
  • Role of the workplace in addressing the needs of victims of domestic violence
  • Benefits of local and centralized death reviews
  • International perspectives on domestic homicide reviews
  • Recent developments in Canadian DV homicide review processes
  • Silent Witness Project in Canada and the U.S.

Invited Speakers:

  • Dr. Jackie Campbell, Professor in the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and the creator of the Danger Assessment Scale (DA) that is used to assess a woman's risk for domestic homicide.
  • Dr. Randall Kropp, Senior Consultant, Forensic Psychiatric Services Commission of British Columbia and Professor, Simon Fraser University.  Co-author of Spousal Assault Risk Assessment Guide (SARA) and the Risk for Sexual Violence Protocol (RSVP).
  • Dr. Stephen D. Hart, Professor in the Department of Psychology and a Member of the Mental Health, Law, and Policy Institute at Simon Fraser University.
  • Dr. Neil Websdale, Professor, Northern Arizona University and the Principal Project Advisor to the U.S. National Domestic Violence Fatality Review Initiative.
