A Festival of Spirituals, 2-28-11A FESTIVAL OF SPIRITUALS AT BAYLOR
The Baylor University School of Music and the Campus Diversity Committee, in observance of Black History Month, present "A Festival of Spirituals" on Monday, February 28, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Roxy Grove Hall. Guest vocalist for this concert will be Gwyn Beaver. She will be assisted by tenor Glenn Beals, pianist Alfredo Colman, and reader Robert Best. Soprano Gwyn Beaver is a native Texan who has lived in Montréal since 2004. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Midwestern State University and a Master of Music degree from the University of Oklahoma. Ms. Beaver has performed with the Fort Worth Opera, Cimarron Circuit Opera, and The University of Texas Opera, and in 2001 she was an apprentice with the Houston Ebony Opera. In December of 2007, she was one of the special guest artists, along with pianist Oliver Jones, performing with the Montréal Jubilation Choir. She is the vocalist for the Montréal-based jazz duo, Pianovoxs. Among the composers and arrangers represented on Ms. Beaver's program will be Roland Hayes, Francis Hall Johnson, and Moses Hogan. Two of the eleven spirituals will be sung as duets with Mr. Beals: "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" and "Ride On, King Jesus." Dr. Best will read a half dozen poems by Mari Evans, Maya Angelou, Alexis De Veaux, Langston Hughes, and Nikki Giovanni. This concert is free of charge and open to the public.
