WOMEN'S CHORAL FESTIVAL HELPS TO FIGHT BREAST CANCER
The 2010 Texas Collegiate Women's Choral Festival rises to an even greater cause than making beautiful music. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this year's festival, on Saturday, October 30, in Jones Concert Hall, joins in the nationwide effort to combat the disease by raising funds, affirming the bold spirit of survivors, and spreading medical knowledge.
Entitled "Sisters Singing for Sisters," the festival is hosted by Baylor University and welcomes women's choirs from six other institutions: the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas A&M University, Texas Woman's University, Mary Hardin-Baylor University, and Texas State University. That tallies to some four hundred collegiate singers who will be participating in the event.
Sigrid Johnson of St. Olaf College will conduct a festival workshop from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and a massed concert will be presented at 7:30 p.m. The Baylor University Women's Choir performs under the baton of Dr. Lynne Gackle, Associate Director of Choral Ensembles.
The 2010 Texas Collegiate Women's Choral Festival will dedicate the evening concert to survivors of breast cancer by recognizing any such women in the audience by having them stand and receive a pink rose or carnation. On stage, each singer will wear a small pink ribbon on her outfit, in remembrance of those who struggled valiantly with the ailment but are now deceased. There also will be a free-will offering from the audience, with proceeds divided equally between the Susan G. Komen fund and the Texas chapter of the American Cancer Society.
According to Dr. Gackle, "In addition to the wonderful music sharing that we will most certainly have, this is a way to ‘bond' our ladies in a common endeavor that transcends the music and touches the spirit, not only of those in the audience but of each other as well."
All activities of the Texas Collegiate Women's Choral Festival are free of charge and open to the public. For more information, call Dr. Lynne Gackle at 254-710-3654.
