Three of Baylor University's tuba/euphonium students placed highly in the 2009 Leonard Falcone International Solo Competition, the finals of which were held on August 17 at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp near Twin Lake, Michigan. Clay Garrett (a graduate tuba performance major) was a finalist and won Third Prize in the Tuba Division of this prominent competition. Kevin Butler (a senior music education major) was a semi-finalist in that division, and Matt Shipes (a 2008 BME graduate and current graduate performance major at the University of Arkansas) was a semi-finalist in the Euphonium Division. The Leonard Falcone Competition, established in 1986 and named in memory of a long-time professor at Michigan State University, brings thirty-two performers from around the world to compete for $10,900 in prize money. It is the only annual solo competition designated for tuba and euphonium, with many past winners/competitors continuing as professional performers and teachers.
