Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Science, Master of Arts (non-International)
All PhD, MS, and MA degree candidates in those departments which have a foreign language requirement, must demonstrate, at minimum, undergraduate intermediate (2320-level) reading proficiency in one, or more, modern foreign languages.For the purposes of establishing and maintaining consistent standards, the Baylor University Department of Modern Foreign Languages employs the following definition of proficiency in reading as it applies to candidates for PhD, MS, and MA degrees:
- Degree candidates can read with good comprehension foreign language publications related to their major field of study.
- With the aid of a paper dictionary they can produce a translation of the printed material into correct, comprehensible English.
- They may have occasional difficulty with complex structures and low-frequency idioms.
Each department that offers the PhD, MS, and/or MA degrees has the prerogative of recommending how many and which of the modern foreign languages its students are to present in satisfaction of the requirement. The most frequently tested languages are French, German, Russian, and Spanish. However, other languages may be substituted with the approval of the Department offering the degree.
