Baylor Establishes Relationships in Estonia

Baylor University has established a relationship with educational leaders in the country of Estonia with hopes to assist the former communist nation redevelop its educational system.
Dr. J.R. LeMaster, professor of English and director of the American Studies Program, visited the country recently for 10 days. He lectured in a college preparatory school in Parnu, visited with the faculty of the Estonian Baptist Theological Seminary in the city of Tartu, and preached in an Estonian Baptist church. LeMaster made the trip at the request of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, which already has a presence in the country.
Baylor's efforts in the country will be humanitarian, LeMaster said. "The educational leaders of the country are hoping Baylor can supply some direction in their development," he said. "The mark of a Christian university is what it can do for other people, particularly people in need."
A way in which LeMaster said Baylor may help the country is through sending students and faculty to the country through its Global Christian Ventures program. Once fully funded, the global missions program will send Baylor faculty and students throughout the world on Christian service endeavors. Another means of help for the Estonians may be sending Truett Seminary students to churches in Estonia for ministry practicum.
"This would be extremely helpful to the person doing the practicum and for the church receiving the help of the student," LeMaster said.
