September 29, 1995

Roger and Jean Wurtele of Shreveport, La. have been named "Parents of the Year" by the Baylor University Parents League. The Wurteles were presented during Parents Weekend activities and halftime of the Baylor-Texas Tech University football game.
The award honors parents that have been actively involved in promoting Baylor in their home community. Teri Tippit, director of the Baylor Office of Recruitment and Parents League, said all of the Parents League officers provide a beneficial service for Baylor, but the Wurteles have gone above the call of duty.
"They have gone the extra mile in spreading the Baylor message in the Shreveport community," Tippit said. "She said the couple coordinates Baylor rallies and send-off parties in the Shreveport area and last year they established a Shreveport section at the football game during Parents Weekend. They also coordinated a dessert party for students during Christmas vacation.
Jean serves as president of the Baylor Parents League and has been crucial in recruiting new parents to the league said Parents League Coordinator Rachelle Sheffield. Roger is a CPA and currently owns his own business, Controllership Services Inc. Their other interests include Chuck Colson prison ministries, Concerned Women for America and Navigators Ministries. They are active members of First Baptist Church of Shreveport.
One of the Wurtele's children Lisa, is currently a junior premed student at Baylor.
