WACO, Texas-Thomas I. Stanton, a former Baylor University basketball and baseball player who served as president of Nelson/Word Direct and Texas Operations, today was named Baylor's Director of Athletic Marketing and Promotion by President Robert B. Sloan, Jr.

"Tom Stanton will relate to all aspects of university life which touch upon the marketing and promotion of Baylor athletics," said Sloan. "He will work closely with the Waco Chamber of Commerce and with business and professional leaders as Baylor prepares for entry into the Big 12 Athletic Conference in 1996. Stanton and Athletic Director Dick Ellis will coordinate plans to see that all areas and opportunities of Baylor's athletic program are successfully presented to fans and the general public, especially in Central Texas."

Ellis said, "Tom Stanton's appointment signals the importance that Baylor places on developing an appealing, comprehensive and well-balanced athletic program. I am looking forward to working in close partnership with him to ensure the success of Baylor's participation in the Big 12 and in all other athletic endeavors."

A native of Abilene, Stanton played basketball and baseball at Baylor in 1968-73, earning three letters in basketball and two in baseball. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Baylor and served as an assistant basketball coach in 1973-74.

Word Inc. was acquired by Thomas Nelson Inc. in 1992, and in 1993 Stanton was named president of Nelson/Word Direct and Texas Operations.
