Baylor Names Stanton to Athletic Marketing Post

WACO, Texas-Thomas I. Stanton, a former Baylor University basketball and baseball player who served as president of Nelson/Word Direct and Texas Operations, today was named Baylor's Director of Athletic Marketing and Promotion by President Robert B. Sloan, Jr.
"Tom Stanton will relate to all aspects of university life which touch upon the marketing and promotion of Baylor athletics," said Sloan. "He will work closely with the Waco Chamber of Commerce and with business and professional leaders as Baylor prepares for entry into the Big 12 Athletic Conference in 1996. Stanton and Athletic Director Dick Ellis will coordinate plans to see that all areas and opportunities of Baylor's athletic program are successfully presented to fans and the general public, especially in Central Texas."
Ellis said, "Tom Stanton's appointment signals the importance that Baylor places on developing an appealing, comprehensive and well-balanced athletic program. I am looking forward to working in close partnership with him to ensure the success of Baylor's participation in the Big 12 and in all other athletic endeavors."
A native of Abilene, Stanton played basketball and baseball at Baylor in 1968-73, earning three letters in basketball and two in baseball. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Baylor and served as an assistant basketball coach in 1973-74.
In 1974, he joined Word Inc., a nationally recognized Christian communications company, where he held several positions over a 22-year career, including director of telemarketing, vice president for direct marketing, vice president for operations, senior vice president for operations, executive vice president for finance and operations and executive vice president for operations, direct marketing and international export.
Word Inc. was acquired by Thomas Nelson Inc. in 1992, and in 1993 Stanton was named president of Nelson/Word Direct and Texas Operations. He was responsible for three major divisions of the company, and under his leadership sales grew 35 percent to more than $28 million in revenue. Nelson/Word is located in Irving, with branch offices located in Waco and other Texas cities.
Stanton and his wife, Kathleen, have two sons, Clinton, 14, and Ryan, 8.
