Baylor University's annual Fiesta will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 30th, in Traditions Plaza at Fifth Street and Fountain Mall on the Baylor campus with a rain location in the Student Union Building. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Hispanic Student Association in conjunction with the department of student activities and the Student Government Allocation Fund.
"Fiesta is an event where students and members of the community can learn about the Hispanic culture while engaging in traditional activities," said Oscar Garcia, a sophomore from Eagle Pass and an officer of the Hispanic Student Association. "Students will be able to experience authentic Mexican food, as well as traditional dances from various part of the Latin-American region."
The event is being held in conjunction with Sigma Alpha Epsilon's second annual Salsa Festival, a competition where students from different organizations may enter their homemade salsa.
"We would like students, faculty, and the community who are from different backgrounds to come and enjoy the event," said Houston junior Kimberly Silva, the 2009 Fiesta Chair. "We realize that most are not exposed to Hispanic culture on a daily basis, and we think it is something that everyone can enjoy and should experience at least once."
Headliners of the event include performances by The Oruesta Caribe Salsa Band, Mariachi Las Margaritas and Danza Azteca.
Silva said that other activities include a children's carnival with face painting, a fashion show with traditional costumes, activity booths and free authentic Mexican food.
"This event is important on Baylor's campus because it spotlights Hispanic culture," Silva said. "I believe it exemplifies some of the most important qualities of Hispanic culture: great music, great food and unity. It is event where all are welcome to come and enjoy."
