Jane Hammond to Discuss Influence of Language, Culture on Art

Jane Hammond, internationally renowned exhibit artist, will give a presentation on "Language, Links and Looking" as part of the annual M.D. Anderson Art Lecture from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 13, in room 149 of the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center on the Baylor University Campus. This lecture, sponsored by the Baylor art department, is free and open to the public.

In her lecture on Thursday, Hammond will speak on the influence of language and culture upon art. She will discuss how this relates to her own paintings and works on paper.

"The goal of the M.D. Anderson Lecture series is to provide Baylor students and community with an opportunity to listen to and meet contemporary, internationally recognized working artists," said Susan Dunkerley, associate professor at Baylor.

Jane Hammond received her bachelor's degree in art from Mount Holyoke College and a master's in sculpture from the University of Wisconsin. She gained prominence in the late 1980s and 1990s as she became known for the rules she places on the creation of her paintings. Such rules include limiting herself to six color palettes, her canvas to two shapes and sizes, and her imagery to 276 appropriated images.

Hammond held her first solo exhibit in 1989 at Exit Art in New York. Since then, her work has been exhibited around the world. Recent achievements include the profile of her digitally altered photographs in the summer 2008 issue of Aperture, and the review of her installation "Fallen" in the April 2008 issue of Art in America.

"We hope to expose those in attendance to the larger world of contemporary visual art through the recounted experiences and works of Jane Hammond, and to give those in attendance a greater perspective of the role of the artist in today's society," Dunkerley said.

This lecture series is made possible by a grant from the M.D. Anderson Foundation in honor of Milton Wilson, a member of the Friends of Fine Arts at Baylor.
