The Institute for Family Business at Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business is accepting applications for the 14th Annual Texas Family Business of the Year awards, which will be presented Oct. 23 at Baylor.
"We feel it is important to recognize and applaud exceptional family businesses in Texas," said Dr. Terry Maness, dean of the business school. "Programs such as this one help us remember and appreciate those who are thriving, prospering and doing things right in the family business environment."
Winners are chosen in three general categories: Large (more than 250 employees); Medium (51-250 employees); Small (50 or fewer employees). Outstanding firms are also honored in special categories: Family Values Award, Community Commitment Award, Fastest-Growing Family Business Award, Well-Managed Family Business Award and Founders Award.
To be nominated, a firm must be headquartered in Texas and have one or more of the following characteristics:

• Has been owned and operated by different generations of a family
• The potential exists for ownership to be passed on to a younger generation
• More than one member of the family has active employment in an organization owned by a family
• A family holding company which is presently operating a business

The Baylor Institute for Family Business maintains that outstanding family firms show concern for their family and its role in the business and the community, demonstrate contributions to their industry and their community and are role models for the family business.
Established in 1987, the institute's primary goal is to support the family business through programs, workshops and forums that provide educational resources to help businesses survive and prosper through the generations.
