Baylor Organizations 'step Out' Into The Community March 29

March 25, 2003

More than 2,200 volunteers from Baylor University student organizations and the Waco community are expected to participate in Steppin' Out, Baylor's bi-annual day of service, on Saturday, March 29.
Participants will gather at 1 p.m. at the Bill Daniel Student Center to collect their tools and then travel to 50 job sites to begin an afternoon of hard work. In four hours, the volunteers will transform local homes and gardens through painting, cleaning and landscaping. Other jobs range from taking part in the annual Lake Waco cleanup to visiting local nursing homes.
Several student organizations send hundreds of representatives each semester to help out with the service project.
"As a member of Tri Delta, I have been blessed to participate in Steppin' Out and serve others in the Waco community," said Vicky Zimmermann, a sophomore from Richardson. "It is such a rewarding experience to witness the appreciation and sometimes tears of joy from the homeowners."
Once again, Steppin' Out has received support from several community organizations and businesses, including Sherwin-Williams, which donated several hundred gallons of paint to the program. The Baylor/Waco Foundation, a "hometown" organization that supports projects that enhance the quality of life in Central Texas, contributed $10,000 to Steppin' Out for the purchase of tools and supplies and for t-shirts for all participants.
After beautifying the sites, volunteers will return to the Bill Daniel Student Center at
5 p.m. for the traditional Celebration of Service. This event allows the participants to relax and enjoy food donated by Cici's Pizza, Bush's Chicken and Shipley's Donuts.
