Saturday Event To Focus On Rural Churches

February 4, 2003

Authors Rebecca Sharpless and Lois Myers will discuss their forthcoming book "Rock Beneath the Sand: Country Churches in Texas" at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, in the church at the Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village.
Sharpless and Myers, who are with Baylor University's Institute for Oral History, interviewed people throughout Central Texas to discover reasons that allowed small rural churches to persist while the area's schools and stores closed. Sharpless will speak on the history of African-American rural churches and Myers will focus on churches founded by German and Czech immigrants.
Photographs from the book, which were taken by Baylor assistant professor Clark Baker, will be on display.
Admission to the lecture is $3 for adults, $2 for senior citizens and $1 for children ages 5 to 15. Baylor students, faculty and staff and children under age 6 will be admitted at no charge.
