Santa Claus is coming to town a little early this year. The 14th annual Santa's Workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Dec. 1, in the McLane Student Life Center on the Baylor University Campus. The event is co-sponsored by Baylor and Aramark.

Approximately 800 children will participate in the event, which began in the early 1990s. The Workshop provides toys for disadvantaged children between the ages of three and five from the Waco community. Santa and Mrs. Claus also are scheduled to make an appearance.

"It is a great opportunity for Baylor and Waco to come together to provide a fun Christmas event for children and Baylor students," said Missy Davis, graduate assistant for community service.

Gifts for the children are donated by Baylor faculty and staff, as well as students, through a toy drive that was held during the month of November.

Lunch and snacks for a goody bag will be provided for the children by Aramark, and local dentists have donated toothbrushes and toothpaste for the goody bag. Several stores also have donated small items for the goody bags.

This year's event is unique from years past because it is the first year the event will be run by a student steering committee. The eight students on the committee are serving as toy drive chairs, community involvement chairs, campus logistics and liaison chairs and volunteer coordinators.

Gift wrapping for presents that will be given during the event will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, in the CUB area of the Bill Daniel Student Center. Decorating for the event will begin at 3 p.m. that same day in the gym of the McLane Student Life Center. Anyone is welcome to volunteer their time.

"Our staff, faculty and student generosity will make a significant difference in the lives of these kids and families," said Karin Klinger, assistant director of student activities and student organizational development.
