Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary will present the sixth annual Willson-Addis Lecture, featuring noted theologian and author Stanley J. Grenz, at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 6, in the Paul Powell Chapel at Truett Seminary. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Grenz is the Pioneer McDonald Professor of Baptist Heritage, Theology and Ethics at Carey Theological College and professor of theology and ethics at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. He will speak on "Christian Spirituality and the Quest for Identity: Toward a Spiritual-Theological Understanding of Life in Christ."
"Dr. Grenz is one of the top evangelical theologians, scholars and authors in North America," said Dr. Roger E. Olson, professor of theology at Truett Seminary.
Olson has co-written two books with Grenz --Who Needs Theology? and 20th Century Theology: God and the World in a Transitional Age, which received Christianity Today's award in 1993 for "Best Book in Theology/Biblical Studies."
Raised in the home of a Baptist minister, Grenz graduated from Denver Seminary and received his doctorate in theology from the University of Munich, where he studied under theologian Wolfhart Pannenberg. Grenz is the author or co-author of 22 books, including his most recent Renewing the Center: Evangelical Theological in a Post-Theological Era. He has served as president of the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion and participates in the doctrine commission and theological education committee of the Baptist World Alliance.
Created in 1964 by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. James McCorry Willson of Floydada, Texas, the Willson-Addis Endowed Lectures examines practical Christianity and draws from any branch of the Judeo-Christian tradition. The Willsons were active Methodist laypersons, involved in many areas of denominational, educational and social service. The lectures were named in honor of the couple's daughter, Ora Eugenia Willson Addis.
Prior to 1997, the lecture was presented through Baptist Student Ministries and administered through the Baylor University Student Life Division. In 1997, Truett Seminary, with its curricular emphases on practical Christianity, became the permanent custodian and sponsor of the annual lecture.
