October 29, 2001

An exhibit that features fiber art by three women will open Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the University Art Gallery in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Art Center on the Baylor University campus. "Surface Design and Construction" showcases the works of Barbara Schulman, Gugger Petter and Sondra Dorn. The exhibit will run from Oct. 30 through Nov. 20 and also on Nov. 27.
"There will be approximately 20 sculptural and two-dimensional pieces in the show. These artists have constructed some cool items. For example, Gugger Petter weaves with newspaper," said Denny Pickett, director of the University Art Gallery.
Petter, a Danish artist with an international career, studied at Den Frie og Merkantile Kunstskole in Copenhagen, and at the Academy of Fine Art in Rome. Her works can be found at the Royal Danish Embassy in Mexico City and the Stanford Medical Center, as well in the private collection of author Danielle Steel.
Dorn is a full-time studio artist who lives near Penland, N.C., and recently completed the Penland resident artist program. Her work has been in recent exhibitions at the Appalachian Cultural Museum and the Folk Art Center.
Schulman is an assistant professor in the arts education and crafts department at Kutzman University in Pennsylvania. She has exhibited her work at the Allentown Art Museum and the Quilt International exhibit, among others.
The University Art Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and during matinee and evening performances of Baylor Theater. The Gallery will be closed from Nov. 21 through Nov. 26 for Thanksgiving. There is no admission charge.
