Myles and Gayle Smith of Edmond, Okla., have been selected as Baylor University's Parents of the Year for 2005. The couple was honored during the halftime ceremony of the Baylor vs. Samford football game Sept. 10 in Waco, Texas.
"Mr. and Mrs. Smith are extremely dedicated, not only in their own community but to Baylor University as well. Their Christian commitment is an inspiration to all who meet them, and we are honored to present them as the 2005 Baylor Parents of the Year," said Judy Maggard, director of parent programs.
Myles Smith is celebrating 30 years of service with his CPA firm, L. Myles Smith and Co., and is a member of several professional organizations. He has been listed in Who's Who publications for Executives and Businesses, Finance and Industry and in Society. Gayle Smith is an author whose works have been included in Chicken Soup for the Soul; God Allows U-Turns; But Lord, I Was Happy Shallow; and Comfort for the Grieving Heart. She serves as an inspirational speaker for Stonecroft Ministries.
The Smiths are loyal supporters of Baylor. In addition to serving the Baylor Parents League, they are members of Development Council and the Baylor Bear Foundation. They were selected as Baylor Alumni By Choice in 2004.
The Smiths also are devoted to their community. They worked in various capacities at Oklahoma Christian School. While Myles dedicated many years coaching basketball and Little League, Gayle served in both the Oak Tree Resident's Club and the Edmond Women's Club. They are active members of Life Church in Edmond where they are members of the Mercy Ministry Support and Missions Support teams and served on the Youth Parents Executive Council and as Life Group Host Home Leaders. In addition, Gayle served on the Women's Council, as a Women's Bible Study Facilitator and as Mexico Mission Team Leader.
The Smiths have two children. Tifani Delaine Smith-Conway received her bachelor's degree in education in 2001. While at Baylor, she was a member and officer of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, a Baylor Beauty and a member of the Dean's Honor Roll and the National Dean's List of Who's Who Among America's College Students. Adam Myles Smith is a junior majoring in accounting. He has received the Presidential Scholarship and is an officer of Delta Tau Delta. He also has been on the Dean's List and the National Dean's List of Who's Who.
In nominating them for the honor, Adam noted, "Our parents' Christian faith and their walk with the Lord has dramatically affected our lives. They have always been a shining example of God's love for us and his purpose and plan in our lives. They have never doubted our abilities, but have always encouraged us in everything we do."
Current Baylor students are given the opportunity to nominate their parents for the Baylor Parents of the Year recognition. The Parents League office receives nominations and selects parents based on their service and loyalty to Baylor.
