Brandon D. Quarles, professor of law and director of the Baylor Law Library, was honored by his alma mater, the University of North Texas (UNT), as a recipient of the university's 2005 Distinguished Alumni Award.
Serving as director of Baylor Law School's law library since 2000, Quarles earned a master of library science degree from UNT in 1995, and his undergraduate degree from Southwestern University. He received a law degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law.
Quarles was honored April 7 at a reception in Austin held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Texas Library Association. He received the award the following day during a 2005 Alumni Appreciation Day program on the UNT campus, honoring outstanding alumni for excellence in their profession.
Dr. Yvonne J. Chandler, associate professor at the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences (UNT/SLIS), said the Distinguished Alumni Award is conferred annually upon graduates who have brought honor to themselves and to the School of Library and Information Sciences through outstanding accomplishments.
"His selection as the 2005 Distinguished Alumni celebrates his exemplary career; his publications, including Legal Research for the Texas Practitioner - a title that was needed by all legal practitioners and researchers in our state; the respect that he holds in the field of law librarianship; and the honor that he brings to UNT/SLIS everyday as he manages the library at Baylor."
In 2001, Quarles was responsible for the mammoth task of moving the entire Baylor Law Library from the old Law School building, Morrison Constitution Hall, to the new Sheila and Walter Umphrey Law Center on the banks of the Brazos River. The library occupies three floors there at the Sheridan and John Eddie Williams Legal Research and Technology Center.
Law Dean Brad Toben described Quarles as a "superb director" of the law library. "Our library and its personnel, so central to the operation of the Law School, receive consistent kudos from all our constituencies on its services and resources. That's due in such large part to the very effective and committed leadership of Brandon. He is committed to excellence and it shows in all he does."
