Gov. Bill And Vara Daniel Historic Village To Host Children's Classes

March 30, 2001

Baylor University's Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village, part of the Mayborn Museum Complex, will host a variety of summer programs for 2-year-olds to children entering the eighth grade.
"Barnyard Buddies" will introduce 2- and 3-year-old children to farm animals. Participants will learn about sheep, donkeys and goats. Class sessions will be held June 18-22 and June 25-19, and each child must be accompanied by an adult.
At "Life on the Farm," children entering preschool through first grade will explore everyday life on a 19th-century farm, while second through fourth graders can experience life at a typical 19th-century village during "A Visit to Pleasant View." Two camp sessions will be held June 4-8 and June 11-15. "Summer Days," for first- through fourth-grade students, will enable participants to make 19th-century crafts and play Victorian games. The camps will run June 18-22 and June 25-29.
Children interested in archeology will enjoy "Keepers of the Treasure," a camp for students in fifth through seventh grade. Participants will conduct an archeological dig, explore historic records and help restore the interior of the Village General Store and Tenant House. The session will run June 4-8.
"Huckleberry Summer" will be filled with a selection of activities that explores life along a river in a Texas rural farm community. Suitable for children entering fourth through sixth grade, the camp will run July 9-13 and July 16-20.
Children in fifth through eighth grade interested in drama can participate in two different theater classes. "The Village Players Drama Camp," a two-week class that runs June 18-22 and June 25-29, will teach participants to portray a resident in the Historic Village. The three-week Melodrama Theater Drama Camp will help children develop their acting skills and will culminate in a public performance of a play. The class is schedule for July 9-27.
Students ages 12 to 18 can participate in the Heritage Society, a junior volunteer program that provides opportunities to help with the Village educational programs, special events, summer camps and historical interpretation.
The summer programs range in cost from $40 for "Barnyard Buddies" to $150 for the melodrama camp. General registration will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at the Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village Town Hall. For more information, call 710-1160.
