June 2, 1999

by Richard Veit

Twenty seven students from California to Florida will converge on Waco from June 6-12 to attend THE 1999 pipe organ encounter, sponsored by the Baylor University School of Music and the Central Texas Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Although some have studied for several years, many of the students will have their first experience playing the organ.
"This year, we have one student as young as 11 who has already played a solo organ recital," said Joyce Jones, Organist-in-Residence at Baylor University and director of the pipe organ encounter. "Several others have already won competitions in Texas and Louisiana."
A full schedule of organ recitals is planned during the week. On Sunday, June 6, Michael Stuart will play his graduate organ recital at 4 p.m. in Jones Concert Hall, followed by Joel Bacon at 7:30 p.m. in Roxy Grove Hall.
Other events include a recital by pipe organ encounter faculty on Monday, Joyce Jones on Tuesday, and Beverly Everett on Thursday -- all presented in Jones Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m.
The week concludes with two recitals by pipe organ encounter students at 7:30 p.m. Friday and at 10 a.m. Saturday, both in Roxy Grove Hall.
All of the recitals are free and open to the public. For more information, call the Baylor School of Music at 710-3991.
