Psychologist to Speak on Advancement of Women Nov. 19

November 17, 1998

Psychologist Dr. Virginia Valian from Hunter College in New York will lecture on "Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women" at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in room 116 of the Draper Academic Building on the Baylor University campus. The lecture is sponsored by Baylor's gender studies program.
Valian will discuss how men and women begin their professional careers on relatively equal footing, but how several years later, men are earning more and are promoted at a faster rate than women. Valian documented her research in her book, Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women. She presently is writing a second book on women and achievement.
Valian's lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Patricia Wallace, professor of history and director of the gender studies program, at 710-2667.
