Baylor Homecoming Pep Rally/Bonfire Set for Nov. 6

October 28, 1998

The Baylor University Homecoming pep rally will begin at 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at the Sub Bowl on the Baylor campus. The Baylor Golden Wave Band and Yell and Song Leaders will perform. Head football Coach Dave Roberts and President Robert B. Sloan Jr. will speak at the rally.
The bonfire will begin at 9:30 p.m. Friday on Fountain Mall between Marrs-McLean Science Building and Sid Richardson.
"It will be "much-reduced" in size to safeguard against fire hazards," said Baylor Department Public Safety Chief Jim Doak.
The bonfire tradition has been in existence since the first Homecoming was held in 1909. Initially, bonfires were built around the campus to guard it from Baylor's football opponents.
In 1963, the freshman class began the tradition of gathering wood the Sunday before the Friday bonfire and posting a guard at the bonfire site to protect it from upperclassman pranks. However, throughout the week, the wood would be burned by the sophomore class resulting in more wood gathering by the freshmen.
The pep rally and bonfire are free to the public. For more information, call the Baylor Chamber of Commerce at 710-3322.
