Baylor University will hold its annual Homecoming celebration Nov. 2-8. The Baylor University Chamber of Commerce and the Alumni Association have planned a variety of special events for the 25,000 alumni and their families who will travel to Baylor from all over the nation.
Baylor has celebrated Homecoming since 1909. The parade, which is believed to be the nation's largest collegiate homecoming parade, will be accompanied by a bonfire, football game, musical variety shows and numerous class reunions.
Pigskin Revue, another Baylor tradition, will showcase award-winning student acts from the 1998 All-University Sing Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m., Friday at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m. in Waco Hall. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Bill Daniel Student Center ticket office.
The Baylor Alumni Association will hold its annual meeting at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 6 in Jones Theater of the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center. At 4 p.m., the meeting will move to the newly renovated and expanded Hughes Dillard Alumni Center for a dedication ceremony.
Many class reunion meetings will be held over the weekend to further encourage people to visit the center. "We expect more than a thousand people to attend alumni meetings and dinners this year," said Paula Tanner, the alumni association's assistant vice-president for marketing and communications. Cabaret will feature Showtime! at 8 p.m. Friday in the Jesse Jones Theater of the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $7.50 and can be purchased from the alumni association.
Later Friday night, thousands of alumni and students will prepare the football team for a victory over Kansas State at the annual pep rally and bonfire at 9:30 p.m. The event will return to its traditional site on Fountain Mall, between Marrs-McLean Science Building and Sid Richardson.
"The bonfire has always been a well-attended event with about 10 to 15,000 people attending last year," said Andy McClain, homecoming chairman for the Baylor Chamber of Commerce. "President Sloan will be speaking, and Coach Dave Roberts will give a pep talk." The nation's oldest and largest homecoming parade will begin its procession at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, on Austin Avenue in downtown Waco. Chamber expects to have more than 150 entries from campus-wide organizations and about 40,000 people in attendance including the Waco community.
Two hours before the big game, Snickers Touchdown Alley, at the south end of Floyd Casey Stadium, will be open for football fans to enjoy live music, vendors, tents and games for children.
