Final contributions to "Operation Phone Card", a fund drive to provide pre-paid phone cards for Texas Army National Guard troops deploying to Iraq, will be collected from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at the last-minute drop-off donation site at Clear Channel radio stations, 314 W. State Hwy 6 in Waco.
The current amount of donations to "Operation Phone Card" stands at $55,000. Organizers hope to collect an additional $50,000 through Dec. 29, so each soldier will head to Iraq with a 140-minute phone card to keep in touch with their families.
On New Years Day, approximately 3,000 Texas Army National Guard troops will take part in a deployment ceremony at 2 p.m. at Baylor University's Floyd Casey Stadium. More than 18,000 family members are expected to attend the ceremony as their loved ones begin the largest overseas deployment of Texas National Guard troops since World War II.
Baylor's Ferrell Center also will take contributions after 1 p.m. Dec. 28-29 and during Baylor men's and women's basketball games on those days. Online donations can be made securely at this link, "Operation Phone Card", through Dec. 29.
