To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, various events and service projects are scheduled throughout the community.

The Institute for Oral History will celebrate its 50th anniversary with an open house starting at 2 p.m. Jan. 24 at Carroll Library, 1429 S. Fifth St.

Baylor's Truett Seminary will host the Alongside Ministry Innovation Conference, a two-day event beginning Jan. 24, which provides ministers of service with tools to work alongside the church.

WACO, Texas (Jan. 16, 2020) – This week, Baylor University will host multiple art exhibits, the Baylor Concerto Competition, the Alongside Ministry Innovation Conference and celebrate the Institute of Oral History’s 50th anniversary. In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, classes will not be held Monday, Jan. 20, and the Baylor and Waco communities will hold various celebrations and service projects throughout Waco to commemorate the life and legacy of the late Civil Rights leader.

SATURDAY, Jan. 18, 2020

Baylor Concerto Competition - The final round of the annual Baylor Concerto Competition will be held from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Jones Concert Hall in the Glennis McCrary Music Building, 101 Baylor Ave. For more information, visit the School of Music website.

SUNDAY, Jan. 19, 2020

John Hartley Exhibition - Baylor’s Martin Museum of Art will host the exhibit “Played in America: Paintings by John Hartley” from Jan. 19 to March 1. Hartley’s work has been critically received and has been featured in collections across the country. The Martin Museum of Art is located in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center, 60 Baylor Ave. Admission and events are free and open to the public. 2020 Art Faculty Exhibition - Baylor’s Martin Museum of Art will host its Biennial Baylor Art and Art History Faculty Exhibition from Jan. 19 to March 1. MONDAY, Jan. 20, 2020

MLK Day of Service - To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Baylor and Waco communities will participate in various events and service projects throughout the city. From 9 a.m. to noon, the 24th Annual Peace March and Observance will take place at Indian Spring Park in Downtown Waco. Mission Waco will host an MLK program and service at the Jubilee Theatre, 1319 N. 15th St., starting at 10 a.m. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the MLK Day of Service will take place at various urban gardens and include the Brazos River Cleanup with Keep Waco Beautiful. The 34th Annual Candlelight Vigil will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park, 300 MLK Blvd. For the full list of service projects and events, visit the Diversity and Inclusion website.

TUESDAY, Jan. 21, 2020

Neighbor Nights - The department of multicultural affairs will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during Neighbor Nights event at 6 p.m. at the Bobo Spiritual Life Center, 500 Speight Ave. The event will have free food and is open to the Baylor community. Institute for Oral History 50th Anniversary - The Institute for Oral History will celebrate its 50th anniversary with an open house. The Institute for Oral History has recorded and preserved oral histories since 1970, earning a strong reputation for multidisciplinary outreach to both academic scholars and community historians by providing professional leadership, educational tools and research opportunities. Attendees will be able to listen to oral histories and see some of the items produced from the interviews. The open house will begin at 2 p.m. at Carroll Library, 1429 S. Alongside Ministry Innovation Conference - Baylor’s Truett Seminary will host the Alongside Ministry Innovation Conference, a two-day conference providing ministers for service with tools to not only work in the church, but to work alongside it. The two-day conference will feature discussions about co-vocational/bi-vocational ministry, entrepreneurship, nonprofit ministry, church planting and supplemental income for students.
