February 25, 1998

by Richard Veit

Baylor University's Jazz Ensemble II will present the first of its two spring concerts at
8 p.m. Friday in Jones Concert Hall in the Glennis McCrary Music Building. The concert will also feature the talents of two student quintet combos (saxophone, trombone, piano, bass, drums).
The program is under the supervision of Vern Sielert, director of jazz ensembles.
The Matt Walker Combo will open the concert with "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and "The Girl from Ipanema."
The Cary Stewart Combo will take center stage to play "All of Me" and "A Chorus for Andy." The latter was written by Cary Stewart, who is the drummer in the combo that bears his name.
The full, 22-member ensemble will present five pieces, including the George Stone arrangement of Johnny Greene's "Body and Soul," Sammy Nestico's "The Spirit Is Willing," Bill Holman's "Blues for Alfy" and Chuck Mangione's "Bellavia."
Closing the concert will be one of Billie Holiday's signature tunes, "God Bless the Child," which she wrote in collaboration with Arthur Herzog.
The concert by Jazz Ensemble II is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Baylor School of Music at 710-3991.
