Fall 2019-2020 Conversation Series on Civil Discourse Begins Sept. 30

Faculty panel discussion will lead off annual conversation series Monday at the Mayborn Museum Complex Theater

WACO, Texas (Sept. 27, 2019) – Baylor University will continue its Baylor Conversation Series this fall, with discussions focusing on civil discourse for the campus community. The annual series – begun by President Linda A. Livingstone, Ph.D., in 2017 – will begin on Monday, Sept. 30, with additional conversations throughout the semester.

The fall Baylor Conversation Series will begin with a panel of Baylor faculty members from various disciplines, who will discuss their research and expertise around civil discourse. The conversation will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Mayborn Museum Complex Theater, 1300 S. University Parks Drive on the Baylor campus. The faculty panelists are:

• Elesha Coffman, Ph.D., assistant professor of American intellectual history
• David D. Corey, Ph.D., professor of political science and director of Baylor in Washington initiative
• Greg Garrett, Ph.D., professor of English and 2013 Baylor Centennial Professor
• Leslie Hahner, Ph.D., associate professor of communication

“Whether in politics, church congregations, on the Baylor campus or even within our own families, there is a significant need for civil discourse in today’s society,” President Livingstone said. “While we may not agree, civil discourse requires mutual respect and objectivity without hostility, while demonstrating an appreciation for the experiences of others. This topic is vitally important for higher education – and especially at Baylor – as we strive to be a marketplace of ideas and extend the love of Christ toward others.”

Other presidential events as part of the Baylor Conversation Series include:

Oct. 16 – Faculty-led roundtables with student leaders at 3:30 p.m., Barfield Drawing Room, Bill Daniel Student Center.

Oct. 28 – Tim Muehlhoff, Ph.D., and Rick Langer, Ph.D., of Biola University, authors of “Winsome Persuasion: Christian Influence in a Post-Christian World,” at 10 a.m., Barfield Drawing Room, Bill Daniel Student Center.

Nov. 15 – Robert P. George, Ph.D., The McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University, and Cornel West, Ph.D., Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard University and Professor Emeritus at Princeton University, at 1:30 p.m., Waco Hall.
