WACO, Texas (Sept. 10, 2018) – Fifty years after its doors opened in September 1968 and millions of patron visits later, Moody Memorial Library will celebrate a half-century of service to the Baylor University community with a come-and-go “birthday party” from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, in the library’s Allbritton Foyer. The event, which is free and open to the public, will focus on Moody’s storied history as Baylor’s main library space.

“Moody Memorial Library has been the academic life center for Baylor since 1968,” said John S. Wilson, interim dean of libraries. “It offers the technology, collaboration spaces, study spaces and services our students need to compete and succeed in today’s academic environment. We are proud to celebrate Moody’s big 50th birthday with a celebration for all of Baylor’s faculty, staff and students – past and present.”

During the celebration, attendees will have the opportunity to view historic displays and take walking tours of its architectural highlights, as well as visit the commemorative exhibit, “Sixty Eight: Built for the Future,” on display in the Goodpasture Concourse. Refreshments will be provided along with classic music from 1968.

The celebration is a part of a year-long series of events honoring the library’s milestone anniversary. In January, Baylor Libraries hosted a “Bring Back the Light” event in celebration of the installation of new exterior lights around Moody’s upper facade. Students also got involved with the celebration through social media and contests, including #IHeartMoody during the month of February and #Moody50 throughout the spring semester.

“The Moody 50 committee began putting together plans for our year-long celebration in the spring of 2017,” said Andrea Turner, chair of the Moody 50th Celebration committee. “We worked to get feedback and Moody memories from current and former staff and faculty and came up with ways to celebrate Moody’s unique place in Baylor history and generally give people a sense that it was important to celebrate this milestone as a campus family.”
