Baylor University Police Department Seeks Assistance from Baylor Community in Investigation

WACO, Texas (April 12, 2018) – The Baylor University Police Department is actively investigating an assault that occurred Thursday, April 12, 2018, on campus and are seeking assistance from the Baylor community.

BUPD is requesting assistance from faculty, staff and students who may have observed suspicious individuals or vehicles near the area of S. Third Street through S. Seventh Street from Daughtrey Avenue to Speight Street around the time of the incident.

If you observed suspicious activity or individuals in these areas from 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, through 1 a.m. Thursday, April 12, please contact BUPD at 254-710-2222.
At approximately 12:10 a.m., a male assailant came up behind a woman and grabbed her around her waist. The complainant was able to break away and run from the assailant and immediately called BUPD.

The assailant fled the area running south on S. Fifth Street away from campus. BUPD immediately conducted a thorough search of the area. There were no weapons involved, and the complainant was not injured. The assailant is described as a male, unknown race, 5’7”, 150 lbs., wearing a gray hoodie and black or dark pants with light-colored shoes.

In response to the incident, BUPD is increasing patrols on campus. Additionally, all faculty, staff and students are encouraged to implement the following personal safety strategies:
1. When traversing the campus, use the buddy system and walk in pairs.
2. Do not utilize headphones or earbuds when traversing campus at night.

3. Download and use the BU Campus Guardian phone app.
4. Be alert and cautious of your surroundings on and off campus.
5. If you see suspicious activity or feel threatened in any way, immediately call the Baylor University Police Department at 254-710-2222 or 9-1-1. (If you See Something, Say Something.)
