WACO, Texas (March 16, 2018) – This week, Baylor University will celebrate Women’s History Month with lectures and history walks. There will also be a variety of concerts, forums and the 16th annual Bearathon half-marathon and 5k.

MONDAY, March 19
Baylor Symphonic Band Concert − Baylor School of Music will host a concert at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Concert Hall in the Glennis McCrary Music Building. The Symphonic Band is led by Isaiah Odajima, Ph.D., associate director of bands at Baylor University. This event is free and open to the public. TUESDAY, March 20
Baylor Theatre: Romeo and Juliet − Baylor’s department of theatre arts presents its production of Romeo and Juliet under the direction of Steven Pounders, professor of acting. Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. March 20-24 and at 2 p.m. March 24-25 in the Jones Theatre in the Hooper Schaefer Fine Arts Center, 60 Baylor Ave. Tickets are $20 each or $17 with a Baylor ID and can be purchased through the theatre box office. WEDNESDAY, March 21
Chapel Highlights − Steve Riach, veteran filmmaker and documentary and television producer, will speak during Chapel services at 9:05, 10:10 and 11:15 a.m. in Waco Hall, 624 Speight Ave. Riach has served for more than 15 years as board chairman for Heart of a Champion Foundation, a charity that has transformed the lives of more than 500,000 young people. Beall Poetry Festival − The 24th annual Beall Poetry Festival will take place March 21-23, featuring guest speakers and a poetry panel. The afternoon events will take place at 3:30 p.m. in Carroll Science Building, Room 101, 1401 S. Fifth St. and the evening events will take place at 7 p.m. in Kayser Auditorium, Hankamer Academic Center, on the corner of Speight Avenue and Fifth Street. Women’s History Month Lecture − Baylor’s department of history will present its annual Women's History Month Lecture, featuring Katherine Benton-Cohen, Ph.D., associate professor of history at Georgetown University. Benton-Cohen will present her lecture, “Immigrant Women and the Rise of the Surveillance State in the Progressive Era,” at 3:30 p.m. in the Marrs McLean Science Building auditorium, MMSCI 101, 1214 S. THURSDAY, March 22
STEM and Humanities Symposium − Baylor University will host the 4th annual STEM and Humanities Symposium from 1-5 p.m. on the fifth floor of Cashion Academic Center, 1401 S. Physics Lecture − The department of physics at Baylor will host Paul Farmer, M.D., Ph.D., Kolokotrones University Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, for his lecture, "To Repair the World." Farmer is a pioneer at the intersection of health care and human rights, an award-winning medical anthropologist, physician, educator and humanitarian. Baylor Art Student Exhibition − Baylor University’s Martin Museum of Art will present the Baylor Art Student Exhibition from March 22-April 15. The opening reception and awards ceremony will take place from 5:30-7 p.m. March 22, in the Martin Museum of Art, Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center, 60 Baylor Ave. Admission is free and open to the public. Concert Choir − Baylor’s Concert Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Concert Hall in Glennis McCrary Music Building, 110 Baylor Ave. This concert is free and open to the public. Free Enterprise Forum: P.J. Hill − P.J. Hill, Ph.D., George F. Bennett Professor of Economics at Wheaton College from 1986-2011, will speak at the Baugh Center’s Free Enterprise forum at 4 p.m. in Paul L. Foster Campus for Business Innovation, Room 250, 1621 S. Third St. His discussion, "Saving the Environment Through Prices and Property Rights," will touch upon his 42-year career as a scholar, teacher, mentor, author and researcher. Libraries Lecture − The Keston Center for Religion, Politics and Society will host former Radio Liberty Moscow Bureau Chief Alyona Kojevnikov for the 2018 spring lecture. Currently serving as the Keston College information officer, Kojevnikov will present her lecture, “HUSH! Religion and the Secular Media” at 3:30 p.m. in Kayser Auditorium in the Hankamer Building at the corner of Fifth Street and Speight Avenue. Kojevnikov will speak on the tense relationship between religion and secular media. The event also will feature a reception and a panel discussion among Baylor faculty experts on religion and media following Kojevnikov's presentation. Waco Women’s History Walk − Baylor’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program, Act Locally Waco and Waco Walks will celebrate Women’s History Month with a walk highlighting Waco women. The walk will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Suspension Bridge on University Parks Drive. Those hosting the walk will discuss women’s roles as pioneers, city leaders and entrepreneurs in Waco. FRIDAY, March 23
Psychology and Neuroscience Workshop − The Office of the Vice Provost for Research and the psychology and neuroscience department at Baylor University will host James W. Grice, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Oklahoma State University, for the workshop, “Observation-Oriented Modeling: A Common Sense Approach to Modern Data Analysis.” Observation-oriented modeling (OOM) is a class of confirmatory and exploratory data analysis techniques to help behavioral and social scientists focus on individual patterns of behavior. The workshop, focused on describing the OOM framework and using the OOM software with some applied examples, will take place at 2 p.m. in Baylor Sciences Building, Room B412, 101 Bagby Ave. For more information, visit the Baylor Research website.

SATURDAY, March 24
2018 Bearathon − Baylor Student Activities will host the 16th annual Bearathon half-marathon at 8 a.m., with the 5k race starting at 8:20 a.m. Each year, around 2,000 runners cross the finish line and more than $25,000 is raised for student scholarships. The race will begin and end at McLane Stadium, 1001 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. For more information, visit the Student Activities website.
