WACO, Texas (Feb. 28, 2018) — For the first time, Baylor University’s Black Student Union will host the 41st annual Big XII Conference on Black Student Government on March 1 to 3.

The conference on the Baylor campus will include workshops, keynote speakers, career fair, health fair and leadership development opportunities that promote the holistic growth of multicultural leadership.

“The conference has been a mainstay for student leadership development for Big XII Institutions for 41 years and should continue to grow in its impact for future generations,” said Leslie Moore, coordinator for the department of multicultural affairs at Baylor. “We are honored to host this event on Baylor University’s campus.”

Conference participants will include the University of Missouri, University of Oklahoma, Kansas State University, University of Colorado, Iowa State University, University of Nebraska, Oklahoma State University, University of Kansas, Baylor University, University of Texas at Austin, Texas Tech University and Texas A&M University.

Universities from outside the conference, such as University of Utah, University of Denver, Wichita State University, Tarleton State University and University of Minnesota, also will attend.

The Big XII Conference on Black Student Government is designed to address issues facing African-American student organizations and black students on college campuses. The council was created in 1977 when black students from all the schools in the Big Eight Conference came together in recognition that they were facing similar problems at their respective institutions. The next year, the University of Missouri students formally created the Big Eight Council and Conference on Black Student Government.

In 1997, the Big Eight Conference was expanded to include the four Texas institutions and form the new Big XII Conference. The Big Eight Council on Black Student Government officially changed its name to the Big XII Council on Black Student Government and included the four Texas schools. Each year, an institute member of the Big XII Council on Black Student Government hosts the Annual Big XII Conference on Black Student Government.
