WACO, Texas (Feb. 23, 2018) — Baylor University’s department of journalism, public relations and new media will sponsor a preview screening of “The Lost Tapes: Malcom X” at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, in Room 101 of the Paul L. Foster Campus for Business and Innovation (Hankamer 101), 1621 S. Third St.

The documentary will highlight some of the unexplored details in the life of Civil Rights activist Malcolm X.

“It’s such a valuable addition to what we know about Malcolm X,” said Sara Stone, Ph.D., chair of the department of journalism, public relations and new media. “Everything that we will see in the documentary will be film of Malcolm X speaking or other events that were going on around the same time.”

The 48-minute screening will be followed by a Q&A session with a panel of experts. Charlie Poe, B.A. (Journalism) ’89, who is senior vice president for production at the Smithsonian Networks and served as one of the executive producers on the documentary, will provide the context behind the production of the documentary. Scott Varda, Ph.D., associate professor of communication, and James SoRelle, Ph.D., professor of history, will answer questions surrounding the historical context of the film.

Poe, former editor for the Baylor Lariat, offered to bring the documentary to Baylor since he will be in Texas for the premiere showing of the documentary in Dallas.

“We are grateful to Charlie for his willingness to come down and make arrangements for our students to see the documentary,” Stone said. “I’m hoping we will have a big turnout, and I’m excited that we get to do this.”

This screening is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Baylor’s department of journalism, public relation and new media at (254) 710-3261.
