WACO, Texas (Feb. 23, 2018) – In celebration of Black History Month, Baylor will host a series of lectures, concerts and conferences as well as a documentary on Malcolm X and a celebration at the Mayborn Museum Complex.

MONDAY, Feb. 26
History Department Lecture − Baylor’s history department will host John H. Bracey Jr., Ph.D., professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, for his lecture, “My Encounters with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.” The lecture, a part of Black History Month, will take place at 3:30 p.m. in Kayser Auditorium in Hankamer Academic Building at the corner of Fifth Street and Speight Avenue. Chapel Highlights − Rev. Vincent Asamoah, graduate of Baylor’s Truett Seminary, will speak during Chapel services at 9:05, 10:10 and 11:15 a.m. in Waco Hall, 624 Speight Ave. Asamoah serves as the Global Regional Coordinator for Central Africa in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes organization and will share his story about living in Kumasi, Ghana, and using basketball to empower Central Africa’s youth. 2018 Miller Lecture − Baylor’s department of political science will present the annual Robert T. Miller Lecture with guest speaker Tom Ginsburg, Ph.D., Leo Spitz Professor of International Law, Ludwig and Hilde Wolf Research Scholar and professor of political science at the University of Chicago Law School. Movie Mondays at the Hippodrome − Baylor Student Activities and the Waco Hippodrome present “I,Tonya,” an American biographical film directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Steven Rogers. The film, documenting the life of competitive figure skater Tonya Harding, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Hippodrome. Tickets are free but must be picked up in advance. TUESDAY, Feb. 27
Bella Voce and Men’s Choir Concert − Baylor’s School of Music will present Bella Voce choir and Baylor Men’s Choir in concert at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Concert Hall in Glennis McCrary Music Building, 110 Baylor Ave. Bella Voce, a chamber choir of thirty female voices, is conducted by choral director Lynne Gackle, Ph.D, and the ninety-seven-member Men’s Choir is directed by professor of church music C. Randall Bradley, D.M.A. Accompanists are John-Micah Braswell for Bella Voce and Bryce Reed and
Joshua Turpin for the Men’s Choir. This event, in preparation for the American Choral Directors Association's Southwest Division Conference in Oklahoma City, is free and open to the public. For more information, visit the School of Music website.

Malcolm X Documentary Screening − Baylor University’s department of journalism, public relations and new media will present a screening of the documentary, “The Lost Tapes: Malcolm X.” The screening will begin at 4 p.m. in Hankamer Academic Building, Room 101, at the corner of Fifth Street and Speight Avenue. Presented entirely through his speeches, newscasts and archival footage, the documentary tells the story of Malcolm X’s efforts to bring equality to black America. Classics Lecture − Baylor University’s department of classics will host a lecture at 3:30 p.m. in Cox Lecture Hall in Armstrong Browning Library, 710 Speight Ave. Steven Muir, Ph.D., professor at Concordia University of Edmonton, will present his lecture, “The Social Self on Pilgrimage: Intercession and Mediation.” For more information, visit the department of classics website.

Science Lecture − Baylor University’s College of Arts & Sciences will host a lecture at 3:30 p.m. in Baylor Sciences Building, Room D-109, 101 Bagby Ave. Anna Villarreal, B.A. ’07, founder and CEO of LifeStory Health, will present her lecture, "Novel Approaches to Diagnosis and Treatment of Women's Disease." WEDNESDAY, Feb. 28
The documentary “Liberated” followed by a panel discussion will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Waco Hippodrome, 724 Austin Ave. “Liberated” is a documentary about the college spring break hookup culture, what it reveals about coming of age in today's world and the startling normalization of sexual violation. Panel members will include the film’s producers, including Baylor's own Dr. Sarah-Jane Murray, students featured in the film and Elizabeth Wellinghoff, training and prevention specialist from Baylor’s Title IX Office, who will discuss how culture may influence acts of sexual violence, how our faith fosters our response and how we can be the change at Baylor. THURSDAY, March 1
Wind Ensemble − The School of Music will host a Wind Ensemble concert at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Concert Hall in Glennis McCrary Music Building, 110 Baylor Ave. J. Sociology Lecture − The department of sociology at Baylor will host Ruth Braunstein, assistant professor at the University of Connecticut,for her lecture, “Prophets and Patriots: Faith in Democracy Across the Political Divide.” Braunstein is a cultural sociologist interested in the role of religion in American political life. Mayborn Lecture − Baylor University’s Mayborn Museum will host a lecture, “Sam Houston: The Texas Legend,” at 11 a.m. in Mayborn Museum, 1300 S. University Parks Drive. The event will celebrate Sam Houston’s 225th birthday and Texas Independence Day. History enthusiast and native Texan Clifton Robinson will educate and entertain guests with stories of the first president of the Republic of Texas. Big XII Conference on Black Student Government − The 41st Annual Big XII Conference on Black Student Government will take place Thursday through Saturday at Baylor University. The conference is designed to address issues facing African-American student government organizations and students on college campuses.
