Homecoming Pep Rally/bonfire Set for Oct. 31

October 21, 1997

The Baylor University Homecoming pep rally and bonfire will be held at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, on the Baylor intramural fields located at University Parks Drive and Bagby Avenue.
The bonfire tradition has been in existence since the first Homecoming was held in 1909. Initially, bonfires were built around the campus to guard it from Baylor's football opponents.
In 1963, the freshman class began the tradition of gathering wood the Sunday before the Friday bonfire and posting a guard at the bonfire site to protect it from upperclassmen pranks. However, throughout the week, the wood would be burned by the sophomore class resulting in more wood gathering by the freshmen.
The pep rally will begin at 9 p.m. with performances by the Baylor Golden Wave Band and Baylor's Yell Leaders and Song Leaders. President Robert B. Sloan Jr. will speak, as well as head football Coach Dave Roberts. "Mic" Man Brad Watson will lead the ceremonies. The presentation will end with the singing of "That Good Old Baylor Line."
The pep rally and bonfire are free to the public. For more information, call the Baylor Chamber of Commerce at 710-3322.
