WACO, Texas (Jan. 16, 2018) – The Baylor University Libraries will celebrate the relighting of Moody Memorial Library’s exterior lights with a ceremony at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, inside Moody’s Allbritton Foyer. Baylor President Linda A. Livingstone, Ph.D., will initiate the countdown that will culminate in the lighting of 92 newly installed LED lights on the upper level of the library. The new lights replace original fixtures that haven’t glowed for decades.

“I am delighted to be one of numerous donors to return the nighttime brilliance to Moody Library. These lights are symbolic of our search for knowledge, truth and hope even during the darkest of times,” said Interim Dean of Libraries John S. Wilson.

Baylor students, faculty and staff are invited to gather in the Allbritton Foyer at 6:30 p.m. for light refreshments and giveaways. Brief remarks by President Livingstone and Wilson will begin at 7 p.m., followed by the lighting of Moody.

When Moody Memorial Library opened in the fall of 1968, it represented the far northern edge of a Baylor campus that was centered on Burleson Quadrangle and Fifth Street. The exterior lights of Moody shone brightly in a lantern-like effect that made the modern, functional building a beacon on campus. But over time, the lights fell into disrepair and were inoperable. An initiative by the Libraries’ Board of Advisors and other friends of the library raised funds to begin work on the new lights in December and work was completed early in the new year.

The project ties in with Baylor’s new marketing and communications campaign, “Where Lights Shine Bright.” The campaign highlights Baylor’s ongoing efforts to be a “light in the world” by adhering to its mission to be a uniquely Christian, nationally recognized research university.
