October 8, 1997

WACO, Texas - The Ollie Mae Moen Discovery Center will hold its 10th bi-annual "Creatures and Culture" family fun day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. The Discovery Center is the children's hands-on facility of Baylor University's Strecker Museum Complex and is the only museum in Central Texas specifically for children and their parents.
This year's event is focused around a carnival theme and will feature In the Company of Clowns, a zany group of clowns from the Waco area. These entertainers will present juggling shows at 10:15 and 11:45 a.m. During these shows, the troupe will teach audience members how to juggle. At 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., the clowns will perform magic shows and at 1:45 p.m., they will make balloon sculptures which children can take home.
Additionally, all exhibit areas in the Discovery Center will be open. The City of Waco recycling coordinator will be in the recycling area to teach visitors more about recycling, composting and solid waste management. In the area around the Discovery playhouse, there will be an exhibit of children's art from around the world. Children also will be able to print their own bookmarks or signs from the hand operated printing press in the communications room.
Other activities include science experimentation, soap bubble blowing, investigating optical illusions, learning about pioneers and Native Americans, discovering salt water creatures and bees and interacting with snakes, salamanders, turtles and guinea pigs.
Admission to the event is free but donations are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
