WACO, Texas (Sept. 18, 2017) – The Institute for Studies of Religion (ISR) at Baylor University will host author Paul Marshall, Ph.D., the holder of the Jerry and Susie Wilson Chair in Religious Freedom at Baylor, for a lecture t 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, in Cox Lecture Hall at Armstrong Browning Library.
The lecture is free, but advance registration must be completed on the Institute for Studies of Religion website.
Marshall's lecture, “Blasphemy and Other Threats to Freedom of Religion and Speech,” will discuss the efforts to suppress religious and political conversation and how these efforts press against Americans’ constitutional rights. Marshall plans to focus his lecture on the oppression of and discrimination against Islam. He has established four categories of victims to this persecution of free speech and will go in deeper detail about their roles and identities during his talk.
Marshall’s areas of expertise include human rights, terrorism, radical ideologies and religious freedom. This discussion will cover the overlaps between these topics as religious institutions come head-to-head with politics in the balance between religious freedoms and freedoms of speech.
Marshall is also a research professor in Baylor’s department of political science, where his current focus of study is the living and working relationships between Muslims and Christians in Indonesia. Marshall is the author of more than 20 books and has been featured on ABC Nightly News; PBS; CNN; FOX; the British, Australian, Canadian, South African and Japanese Broadcasting Corporations; and Al Jazeera. His work has been published in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Washington Times, The Boston Globe, The Dallas Morning News, Christian Science Monitor, First Things, New Republic, Weekly Standard, Readers Digest and many other newspapers and magazines.
