WACO, Texas (Sept. 6, 2017) – Baylor University Theatre will host a performance of The Fertile River on Sept. 16-17 in the Mabee Theatre of the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center.

The storyline takes place in 1958 during the peak of the Eugenics Board of North Carolina, an institute that sought to eliminate the “weakest genes” of society. Playwright Vincent Terrell Durham addresses difficult subjects including racism, classism and the abuse of the mentally ill.

“In the telling of just one story, the Fertile River looks unflinchingly at the sins of a racist and classist America where people are valued or devalued by the color of their skin, the place of their birth, or the score of their IQ,” wrote the Baylor Department of Theatre Arts.

Tickets go on sale Sept. 7 and can be purchased for $5 through the Theatre Box Office 254-710-1865 or on the department’s website, www.Baylor.edu/theatre.
