Hurricane Relief Support Becomes Focus of Sept. 1 Traditions Rally at Baylor

Free community-wide event serves as a collection site for specific items for Hurricane relief efforts; features football pep rally, Kids Zone, skydive team, Judah & the Lion concert and fireworks

WACO, Texas (Aug. 27, 2017) – Judah & the Lion, one of Nashville's most genre-bending bands, will headline Baylor University’s annual Traditions Rally on Friday, Sept. 1, on Fountain Mall.

The free, community-wide event celebrates the upcoming football season as the Bears prepare to open against Liberty at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at McLane Stadium.

Hurricane relief collection sites

During this weekend’s campus events, the Baylor Family is invited to support those impacted by Hurricane Harvey’s flooding and storm damage by bringing bottled water and supplies to collection sites on Baylor’s campus.

Beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, the Hurricane Response PODS will be located on Fifth Street near the SUB and the Traditions Rally event. Beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, ahead of Baylor’s season opening football game, Hurricane Response PODS will be located on Fifth Street (drive-thru drop off), in the Ferrell Center parking lot and near the Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium.

Among the items most needed in the affected areas are:

• Bottled water
• Toiletries: Soap, shampoo, toothpaste/toothbrushes
• Diapers
• Powdered baby formula
• Baby wipes
• Toilet paper
• Dog food
• Complete Hygiene Kits that include washcloth, soap, razor, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant

Baylor has established www.baylor.edu/response, which will provide updates about how the community can assist in relief efforts.

Traditions Rally events

In addition to the free concert, the Traditions Rally will include a Kids Zone with inflatables, a video game party truck and free snow cones for kids 12 and under; a four-man parachute jump team; and pep rally, featuring the Golden Wave Marching Band, spirit squads and Bruiser, President Linda A. Livingstone, Coach Matt Rhule, Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades and members of the Bears’ 2017 football team.

Food and drink will be sold throughout the event from local food trucks and vendors. After the Judah & the Lion concert, the celebration will close out with a fireworks show.

“The event line-up this year will continue a great tradition of kicking off the Baylor football season with the Baylor and Waco communities in grand fashion,” said Matt Burchett, director of student activities, “There will be something for everyone with great music, games, fireworks, skydivers and plenty of Baylor spirit.”

• 5:30 p.m.: Event, food trucks and vendors open to the public
• 7 p.m.: Pep Rally
• 8 p.m.: Judah & the Lion in concert, followed by a fireworks show

Their debut record, “Like Kids These Days,” climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard Folk Chart and No. 2 on the genre-wide Heatseekers chart after its release in 2014.
