WACO, Texas (Feb. 28, 2017) – The work of four apparel design and product development majors at Baylor University received national recognition at this year’s highly competitive National Make it with Wool competition held in Denver recently.

Annelise Ingram, a senior from San Antonio, was named national runner-up in the senior division and also tied for first place in the Competitor’s Choice category. Judging was based on creativity, quality of construction, coordination of fabric, style, and design, presentation and interview skills. Ingram had advanced to the national competition after winning first place at the Texas Make it with Wool contest in November.

“It was an honor to participate at the National Make it with Wool competition this year and to be able to represent Baylor,” Ingram said. “I was surprised and excited to win runner-up.”

Ingram designed and constructed two garments – a garnet coat with the key feature being what she has termed “book-pleat” sleeves and an ivory cashmere dress with contrasting back panels made from the same wool as the coat. She drew inspiration for the sleeves from a coat in Christian Dior’s 2008 collection, but “everything else exhibits my love for feminine silhouettes and '20s style clothing,” she said.

At Nationals, Ingram modeled her garments for a panel of judges and answered interview questions. The competition concluded with a fashion show held for all conference attendees and the announcement of awards.

“Learning to be a designer has very much been a growing experience,” Ingram said. “Three years ago I didn’t know how to sew. Thankfully at Baylor I have great professor mentors and great peers to challenge and inspire me

“The level of competition was most intense in the national senior division where Annelise entered with participants representing multiple states across the U.S.,” said Jaynie Fader, senior lecturer in family and consumer sciences. “Annelise is a perfect blend of creative and curious, and she understands the fundamentals of textile science, technology, marketability, color theory, history of dress and design.”

Three other apparel design students won awards in a different category specifically for college design students: the National Design Make it with Wool competition. Their garments, sketches, photographs and videos were judged on creativity, design and construction. Chuk Chidume, a senior from Austin, won third place; Elizabeth Hernandez-Florez, a senior from Arlington, placed fourth; and Carlee Green, a senior from Colleyville, finished in fifth place.

“Chuk, Elizabeth and Carlee also created their coat and dress projects in the ADM 3373 course where they applied their wide range of expertise, skills and knowledge from forecasting, trend analysis, fabric analysis, sketching, design, pattern making, product development and construction to design and create these garments,” Fader said. “The project and competition was a true test of their knowledge and abilities that they have acquired since they started at Baylor.”
