WACO, Texas (Feb. 24, 2017) – This week, Baylor University will host several notable speakers, events and concerts, including the African Student Association Fashion Show and a black gospel music celebration in honor of Black History Month.

FRIDAY, Feb. 24

Today’s Russia – Roman Lunkin, Ph.D., Woodrow Wilson Fellow and senior researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, will speak on “Today’s Russia: Religion, Politics and Society” at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, in Kayser Auditorium in the Hankamer Academic Center. The lecture is hosted by the Keston Center for Religion, Politics and Society at Baylor University and will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Chairman Xenia Dennen of the Keston Institute in Oxford, former U.S. Congressman Chet Edwards and Baylor Political Science Professor Sergiy Kudelia. Wallace Daniel, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of History at Mercer University, will serve as moderator. For more information, visit the Keston Center website.

ASA Fashion Show – The African Student Association Fashion Show will be held at 6:30 p.m. in Barfield Drawing Room of the Bill Daniel Student Center, 1311 S. Lyceum Series – Bradley Kent, D.M.A., state director of music for the University Interscholastic League (UIL), will speak at 6:15 p.m. in Meadows Recital Hall in Glennis McCrary Music Building, 110 Baylor Ave. This event is free and open to the public. TUESDAY, Feb. 28

Cross Cultural Neighbor Night – The department of multicultural affairs will host a Cross Cultural Neighbor Night at 6 p.m. in the Bobo Spiritual Life Center, 500 Speight Ave., in which a panel of students or community members will discuss the similarities and differences across cultures and religions. Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble – The Baylor Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Concert Hall in Glennis McCrary Music Building, 110 Baylor Ave. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit the School of Music website.

SHOUT! Black Gospel Music Moments – The Baylor Libraries, KWBU 103.3 FM and the Baylor Bookstore will host a black gospel music celebration in honor of Black History Month from 4 to 6 p.m. in Moody Memorial Library, 1312 S. Third St. Dr Pepper floats will be served as gospel music is played. Robert Darden and KWBU on-air personalities will be there to visit.

Civitas Lecture – Arthur Milikh, associate director of B. Kenneth Simon Center for Principles and Politics at the Heritage Foundation, will speak on “The Power and Necessity of Art” at 4 p.m. in Baines Room, Bill Daniel Student Center, 1311 S. Sociology Lecture – Patricia A. Thomas, Ph.D., assistant professor of Sociology at Purdue University, will speak at 3:30 p.m. in Draper Hall 345 of the Draper Academic Building, 1420 S. Seventh St., on the topic “Can Relationship Strain Benefit Adult Health?” This event is free and open to the public.

ISR Lecture – Kate Bowler, Ph.D., assistant professor of the history of Christianity in North America at Duke Divinity School, will speak on “The Mommy Wars: Modern Megaministry and the Battle for Sacred Motherhood” at 3:30 p.m. in Room 102 of the Paul L. Foster Campus for Business and Innovation, 1621 S. Third St. This event, hosted by the Institute for Studies of Religion (ISR), is free and open to the public.
