Baylor Model United Nations Students Honored at International Conference

WACO, Texas (Dec. 2, 2016) – Three members of Baylor University’s Model United Nations team were honored at the American Model United Nations Conference in Chicago, Illinois, last week.
The Baylor Model UN (MUN) team attends the AMUN Conference each year. More than 1,500 students traveled from around the world to attend the conference and participate in a simulation of the United Nations.
Baylor students represented Angola and served as diplomats in simulated sessions of the United Nations General Assembly committees, the Security Council, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the International Court of Justice.
Preparing for and participating in Model UN conferences help students develop skills including research, technical writing, public speaking and negotiation, said Rebecca Flavin, Ph.D., senior lecturer of political science in the College of Arts & Sciences and Baylor MUN faculty advisor.
Three of the 14 Baylor students who attended the conference received individual awards. Marc Webb, head delegate, Kate Farley, Baylor MUN assistant head delegate and Megan Rollag, assistant head delegate, were named Outstanding Delegates by their peers.
“I’m thrilled for our students when their hard work is recognized in a venue such as this,” Flavin said. “The award winners at this conference are our three student leaders who, in addition to preparing their own work for conference, have spent hours each week helping me to train their fellow team members to attend these events.”
Flavin said students studied a variety of topics for this conference, including global health and foreign policy, industrial development cooperation, implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the situation in Afghanistan.
“The educational value of these conferences for the students who attend is amazing beyond measure, and this experience is always the primary goal of the event,” Flavin said. “Awards are like icing on the cake and bring recognition to both the students and the wonderful academic programs at Baylor University.”
