Distinguished Physiologist to Present Lecture on ‘Preconditioning’ Cardiac, Skeletal Muscle Fibers

WACO, Texas (Nov. 30, 2016) — Scott K. Powers, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of applied physiology and kinesiology at the University of Florida, will present a lecture on Thursday, Dec. 1, as part of The Texas Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (TACSM).
The lecture, titled “Teaching Myocytes New Tricks,” will be a discussion on exercise-induced “preconditioning” of both cardiac and skeletal muscle fibers and will take place at 2:10 p.m. in SBC Theater, Mayborn Museum, 1300 S. University Parks Drive.
Powers is a physiologist specializing in investigating the effects of muscular exercise and inactivity on both cardiac and skeletal muscle. He has earned three University of Florida teaching awards and co-authored four textbooks used in college exercise physiology courses.
“Scott Powers is an international expert in cardio protection and the human musculoskeletal system,” said Pete Grandjean, Ph.D., professor in the department of health, human performance and recreation in the Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences. “He is a co-author of one of the best-selling exercise physiology textbooks worldwide, and he’s one of the most captivating and engaging teachers to ever have graced the classroom. This will be an amazing talk, and we’re proud to have him share his knowledge and expertise with us.”
Powers has received multiple academic honors, including being elected president of the Southeastern chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (1986) and vice president of the American College of Sports Medicine (1997-1999)
This lecture is hosted by Health, Human Performance and Recreation and the Baylor University Exercise Science Student Association. It is free and open to the public.
