New Area Code, 710 Prefix to Affect Baylor Telephone Use

May 15, 1997

WACO, Texas - All telephone numbers pertaining to Baylor University will soon change, according to Gary Luft, director of purchasing and campus services.
Effective May 24, the area code for Baylor will change from (817) to (254). This change was mandated by the Public Utilities Commission and will impact all of the Waco-metropolitan area, Luft said.
Effective Aug. 1, the 755 prefix used at Baylor will change to 710. Luft said Baylor officials requested the change for efficiency reasons, adding that "we will be allotted all 10,000 of the 710 prefix. The entire bank of the 710 prefix will be exclusive for Baylor's use."
The last four digits of existing Baylor-area telephone numbers will not change, Luft said.
Luft said there will be no period of time when the 755 and 710 numbers will work concurrently. "On Aug. 1 at 12:01 a.m., the change to 710 will take place and 755 will no longer be a working prefix at Baylor," he said. For a period of one year after Aug. 1, a recording on the main campus number of 755-1011 will inform callers that the new prefix is 710 and they will have to redial using that number, Luft added.
The changes will impact the more than 13,000 Baylor students, faculty and staff on the Waco campus.
"We want to inform as many people as possible about these changes now," Luft said. "Items such as stationery, athletic information, business cards, recruiting pieces - just about anything to do with Baylor will be affected.
"We're hoping we can have a smooth transition to these numbers, and proper planning and coordination is essential." For more information, call Luft at (817) 755-3463.
