Acclaimed Trumpeter Andrew Balio Performs in Distinguished Artist Series

WACO, Texas (Sept. 30, 2016) – Acclaimed trumpeter Andrew Balio will perform with the Baylor Symphony Orchestra as part of the Distinguished Artist Series at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3, in Jones Concert Hall, located within the Glennis McCrary Music Building, 110 Baylor Ave.
Balio has worked with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic. As a soloist, Balio has performed worldwide. He is also a writer and thinker in the areas of how schools train young musicians for a career in music and the future of the symphony orchestra in contemporary society.
“Andrew Balio, as principal trumpet of the Baltimore Symphony, is recognized as one of the top brass musicians in the world today,” said Gary Mortenson, D.M.A., dean of the School of Music.
The concert will include performances of Joseph Haydn’s “Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major,” “Son et Lumière” by American composer and Baylor alumnus Steven Stucky and “Symphony No. 4,” also known as “The Inextinguishable” by Danish composer Carl Nielsen.
“A great education must include an awareness of the richness of life that can only come from developing an appreciation for culture and the arts,” said Stephen Heyde, the Mary Franks Thompson Professor of Orchestral Studies, Conductor-in-Residence and director of orchestral activities. Heyde will conduct the Baylor Symphony Orchestra in Monday’s concert.
This performance is part of the Distinguished Artist Series, which brings three professional musicians to Baylor for live performances each year.
“Our campus community and indeed the greater Waco area benefits from having access to the very best music the world has to offer,” Mortenson said.
Balio will also give a lecture sponsored by the Honors College at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
