Farrell O’Gorman Delivers the 2016 Charles G. Smith Lecture

WACO, Texas (Sept. 29, 2016) – Farrell O’Gorman, Ph.D., will deliver the 2016 Charles G. Smith Lecture at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, in room 101 of Carroll Science Building, 1401 S. Fifth St.

O’Gorman is professor and chair of the English department at Belmont Abbey College. He is the author of “Peculiar Crossroads: Flannery O’Conner, Walker Percy and Catholic Vision in Postwar Southern Fiction.” He is also the author of a novel, “Awaiting Orders,” and his creative work has been featured in journals such as Image, Shenandoah and Gettysburg Review.

The Charles G. Smith Lecture is an annual lecture named in honor of former English professor Charles G. Smith, Ph.D. It is the major endowed lecture in Baylor’s English department each year.

“His book, ‘Peculiar Crossroads: Flannery O’Connor, Walker Percy, and Catholic Vision in Postwar Southern Fiction,’ published by LSU Press in 2004, explores and charts the Catholic sensibility of these two literary giants in postwar Southern culture,” said Richard Russell, Ph.D., professor of English at Baylor in the College of Arts & Sciences.

O’Gorman’s new book on American Catholicism, the Gothic and literary borders will be published by Notre Dame University Press in 2017.

“Dr. O’Gorman is an internationally recognized scholar of Southern literature and has published widely on writers such as Flannery O’Connor, Walker Percy and others,” Russell said.

O’Gorman’s lecture is titled “Catholicism and American Borders in the Gothic Literary Imagination.”

The event is free and open to the public.
