WACO, Texas (Aug. 26, 2016) – This week, Baylor will host several notable speakers, lectures and events.
MONDAY, Aug. 29
School of Music Hosts Lyceum Lecture by Richard Floyd – Conductor and music educator Richard Floyd will speak about the foundational beliefs of music educators at 6:15 p.m. in the Meadows Recital Hall in the Glennis McCrary Music Building on campus. The lecture is part of the School of Music’s Lyceum Series, which began at Baylor in 1976 and is funded by the Meadows Foundation of Texas.
“Mr. Floyd will address a discussion of core beliefs and the importance of artistic, professional sustenance as music educators,” said Michael Alexander, Ph.D., associate professor of instrumental music education. “His goal will be to discuss talking points that help shape our core beliefs and shore up our beliefs in ourselves and our careers when times are tough.”
Chapel Highlights – Baylor University Executive Vice President and Provost Greg Jones, Ph.D., whose theological work focuses on the nature of forgiveness, the significance of Christian ministry and social innovation, will speak in Chapel at 9:05, 10:10 and 11:15 a.m. For more information and a list of future speakers, visit the Chapel website.
TUESDAY, Aug. 30
Czech Exchange Student Lectures on Czech Culture in Texas – Alice Lu'?áková, from Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic, will present a joint Keston Center and Texas Collection lecture entitled “How Kolaches Came to Texas: A Social and Cultural History of Czech Migration” at 3:30 p.m. in the Texas Collection, on the first floor of Carroll Library, 1429 S. Hispanic Student Association Hosts Hispanic Student Night – As part of the Department of Multicultural Affairs’ Mosaic Week, the Hispanic Student Association will host Hispanic Student Night at 6:30 p.m. in room 250 of the Paul L. Asian Student Cabinet Hosts Mosaic Asian Night – The Asian Student Cabinet will host Mosaic Asian Night as part of Mosaic Week, presented by the Department of Multicultural Affairs and sponsored in part by the Student Development Team. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Barfield Drawing Room of the Bill Daniel Student Union Building, 1311 S. Indian Subcontinent Student Association Hosts South Asian Night – As the final event of the Department of Multicultural Affairs’ Mosaic Week, the Indian Subcontinent Student Association will host South Asian Night. Traditions Rally on Fountain Mall - Aloe Blacc, the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter of the megahit “Wake Me Up,” will headline Baylor University’s annual Traditions Rally on Thursday, Sept. 1, on Fountain Mall. The free, community-wide event - which includes pep rally, food trucks and fireworks following the concert - celebrates the upcoming football season as the Bears prepare to open against Northwestern State at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at McLane Stadium.
FRIDAY, Sept. 2
Remembering Our Hope Panel Discussion and Vespers Service - Baylor University students, faculty, staff and alumni will explore how friendship can enrich community and cultivate virtues during a panel discussion, “Companions in Hope: Why Community Is Good but Friendship Is Better,” at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, in Roxy Grove Hall. A Vespers and music service will follow the discussion at 3 p.m., also in Roxy Grove.
