Baylor Student Receives Scholarship and Newspaper Internship

April 30, 1997

Lisa Marie Zapata, a Baylor University junior and journalism and environmental studies major from San Antonio, has been selected to receive a $2,500 scholarship from the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association and a nine-week summer internship at the Waco Tribune-Herald.
The program was designed to promote opportunities for African-American, Hispanic, Native American and Asian American students. This is the first year the internship has been included in the award.
Recipients of the award were selected on the basis of college transcripts, work experience, letters of recommendation, college activities, samples of newspaper work and a written statement saying why they are interested in a newspaper career.
Zapata is scheduled to graduate in May of 1998.
Zapata's internship will include reporting on features and news. Students from other universities selected to receive the SNPA award will intern at the Fort Pierce (Fla.) Tribune, and the Amarillo Globe-News.
