The 2016 Annual President’s Concert Will Present German Master Johannes Brahms’ ‘A German Requiem’

WACO, Texas (April 28, 2016) – The Baylor School of Music will host its annual President’s Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30, in Jones Concert Hall, located within the McCrary Music Building on Baylor’s campus. This year’s program will present German master Johannes Brahms, as he performs “A German Requiem, Op. 45.”
The Baylor University A Cappella Choir and Concert Choir, conducted by Lynne Gackle and Stephen Gusukuma, will sing the choral lines, with Baylor graduates Kiri Deonarine (soprano) and Thomas Cannon (baritone) appearing as soloists. Conductor-in-Residence Stephen Heyde will lead the vocalists. The award-winning Baylor Symphony Orchestra also will perform.
Deonarine has received outstanding reviews for her work at the Chicago Lyric Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Cannon has performed in Carnegie Hall and completed internships with the Glimmerglass Festival, Dallas Opera and Santa Fe Opera.
“’The German Requiem’ is Brahms’ largest work in any medium,” said musicologist Stephen Ledbetter, Ph.D. “He has not only established himself as a mature composer in the eyes of his contemporaries but also wrote one of the special choral works that singers return to with as much delight as audiences, a unique masterpiece of technique and effect expressing the universal longings of mankind.”
