Senior Class Honors Chemistry Lecturer With Collins Outstanding Professor Award

WACO, Texas (April 15, 2016) – There are hundreds of professors at Baylor University, but each year only one is chosen by the senior class to receive the Collins Outstanding Professor Award. Bruce Hodson, Ph.D., senior lecturer in the department of chemistry and biochemistry, is this year's winner.
The Collins Outstanding Professor Award includes $10,000 and recognition at spring commencement, as well as a lecture on a topic chosen by the winner.
At Hodson's lecture, "A Chemist’s Perspective," he will talk about how he ended up at Baylor and introduce a few of his favorite chemistry-related topics. The lecture will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, in Room D110 of the Baylor Sciences Building. A reception honoring Hodson will follow. Hodson's lecture also will be published and made available to the public.
Hodson said he was surprised to win the award, as he teaches freshman and sophomore chemistry classes, so the seniors who vote on the award have not taken a class of his in two or three years.
"I'm very surprised that people would remember me, and honored that they remember me favorably," he said.
Hodson came to Baylor in the fall of 2001 as a postdoctoral researcher and was hired as a lecturer in 2007.
"The best thing about Baylor is the people that you meet," he said. "My favorite part of the job is actually getting to know people, either during office hours or just around the university outside of classes. Lecturing is fun, but from a teaching standpoint it's not always as effective as one-on-one discussions, especially with the very large freshman classes that I have."
The Collins Outstanding Professor Award is provided by the Carr P. Collins Foundation to honor outstanding professors at Baylor.
The lecture is free and open to the public. The BSB is located at 101 Bagby Ave.
